Philippines : lute music in T'boli country
Music of the world
Maria Fe and Luming are probably the two best players of hegelung in the village of Dekolon, the main T’boli community around the Sebu lake, in the Philippines. They play the hegelung, a thin wooden lute, whose lean and gracious sound box is prolonged by a long and slender neck. They started playing the hegelung when they were children, as teenagers they were both approached in their dreams by the Hegelung Guardian. This muse has been encouraging them to persevere in their practice of the hegelung, sometimes teaching them new compositions. They interpret a repertoire of dances and love songs, transcribed for the lute.
