Teta hails from Ampanihi, a village located on the long track connecting Tulear and Fort Dauphin, right in the Great South region of Madagascar. Born in 1967, he grew up in the midst of the traditional music style called Taspiky, travelling with his father and brother who performed at celebration andbals poussière (dances in the dust) as well as traditional ceremonies throughout the region. He first started to learn the mandolin but opted for the guitar at the age of eight. He was soon spotted for his talent and agility and nicknamed “the nimble-fingered guitarist”. Indeed, his fingers dance on his guitar neck with surprising dexterity, seeking the most unexpected harmonic sonorities as well as typical rhythmic figures. Teta has always remained faithful to his origin and to the fast, bewitching 6/8 Tsapiky rhythm, which accompanies all festive events as well as trance ceremonies throughout the region. He has also regularly performed with other artists of different musical sensitivity, and is especially fond of wandering into the world of jazz and blues while retaining his own specificity.Teta writes songs in the manner of Malagasy storytellers, launchings ideas, raising issues and tackling the concerns of the Great Isle inhabitants.
