Yiddish Songs From Yesterday And Today
Musical Heritage of the Jews of France
Jacques Grober, an artist, cabaret singer and poet above all, occupies a particular place inthe universe of Yiddish song in France. He is indeed one of the rare, perhaps the only artist to have perpetuated its spirit and renewed its repertory during the last thirty years. “He has put the Yiddish song, in all its facets, back into contemporary space, borrowing his luminous and dark themes from both history and current topics… Grober’s audacity is to draw inspiration from the tradition to create political songs that are politically incorrect, because it aims at dissipating the political illusion through humour.”
Born in 1951, Jacques Grober died prematurely on March 26, 2006, as a consequence of a long illness. The Fondation du Judaïsme Français wished to pay homage to him by the publication of this CD .
