The Psalms of the Jews of Constantine
Musical Heritage of the Jews of France
Constantine had a large Jewish community for many centuries. The recitation of psalms was a true art where each singer, while respecting both the Biblical text and the Arab-Andalusian modes, excelled in finesse in improvisations aiming to touch as many believers’ hearts as possible. In this eleventh volume of the collection Musical Heritage of the Jews of France, Mister René Guedj, Chief Rabbi, as well as Messrs André Taïeb, Yohan Bismuth and Ylane Zerbib present us with a choice of psalms in the Constantine tradition.
