Polyphonic Songs Of The Bearn Province

Music of the world

The Bearn province in southwestern France has a living tradition of polyphonic song, which can be heard at every festive celebration and may involve two, three, five, ten or thirty singers who stand in a circle, mouths close to each other, so that the vocal vibrations intertwine and feed one another, thus giving a true sensation of unity. A living tradition is a tradition in evolution, and by bringing in their personal, contemporary musical practices, the singers of La Novem have helped this repertoire evolve.
